Shawford Down Memorial

Last November lockdown2 stopped our work and this site was the first loser. So we’re returning to this vertically challenging location to continue the renewal over 240m of stock fence along the West (top) boundary. Fine views over the Itchen valley.

Ranger Mike and his local volunteers will clear the line. Our earth auger will be busy in the chalky soil. Please bring your own tools if you have them, and a container for staples. For week 1 Geoff and Dennis will bring just enough tools for the job in their cars.

Note that the top carpark off the main road will be our best choice.

Week 1. Much effort was expended setting in about 10 strainer posts and a little work remains to finish this next week when the focus will be on putting in up to 100 intermediate posts.

By the end of week 3 we had installed stock fence beyond the original request. In putting back the old barbed wire we stopped short of the original target by about 60m
