Hayling fencing

Event Details

This event is running from 21 May 2025 until 28 May 2025. It is next occurring on 21st May 2025

Two weeks of fencing on Hayling Island in the fields between the Campsite field and the field off West Lane known for its growth of Dyer’s Greenweed and stony earth.

All fencing tools, large and small will be required and probably loppers/hedge trimmers in case there is veg in the way. AND YOUR PPE!

Nick leading the task on his debut.

Suggested parking is in Campsite field or at the sharp bend on West Lane. Now conformed.

Additional task leader Briefing for 21 and 28 May

We will be replacing a fence along the northern boundary of a large field approximately 140m long.

The old fence will have been removed by other volunteers previously and the hedge cut back to allow us a clear working line. (There were piles of clippings when I visited – hopefully these will be gone by the time we visit.)

The entrance to the site is odd – there are two turnings right on the bend – if you turn too soon you will end up in a stable yard. The correct turning looks as if it is a private driveway to a couple of houses which you leave on your left as you travel onwards to a field gate (combination lock), beyond which we park.

I am advised that Martin will endeavour to put in at least some of the end/strainer posts before we arrive.

The ground is silt overlying alluvial gravel – much like the ground at Hook/Warsash recently.

We will need every fencing tool we possess including but not limited to: string line(s), auger, spades, rabbit spades, spikes, water bucket, hammers, fencing pliers, Drivalls, mattock, hand strainers, monkey strainers, stock fence strainers, maul, carpentry tools (for stainers), nails

I have asked Martin to bring water if there is no tap in the field if we need to concrete in additional strainers. He will also have a selection of tools and hopefully even some staples to fix the fence.

I am told there are quite a few apologies next week (maybe due to the choice of task leader?) so as many of you as possible who are available would be welcome. It is likely to be sunny and there is no shade on site so please don’t forget the sun cream!
